p2p lawsuit insurance!

Hahahahaha!!! i just cant stop laughing! With RIAA suing p2p filesharers left, right and centre, you’d think people would be getting worried and cautious! But just check these dudes out.. they’re offering insurance against p2p lawsuits by RIAA!

Dig this – pay 19$ a year, and if u get sued by RIAA, these fellows will pay off you’re lawsuits! and to top it off, they’ll give u a free t-shirt!! haha.. awesome! i love the way these guys think.. i mean, seriously! its a brilliant idea… come to think of it… how many p2p filesharers are there? millions!.. and how many get caught by RIAA.. if u do the math.. you’ll see an awesome market opportunity for these guys.. the business model seems to make a lot of sense..

Oh wait! aren’t there legal sites to download music that give you yearly subscriptions for around that much (19$/year).. then why would i insure myself and dload illegaly instead of just doin it legally.. But then again.. illegaly u could dload everything.. movies included.. And of course.. its a great way to show ur finger to RIAA!

pleasant surprise!

I came to my cubicle this morning and found a huge box of raisin bran on my desk. It had a note on it. Amused and curious, I walked over to it and read the note. It said:

Hi Prashant,
Thanks for everything!
Dao
06/26/06

And instantly a smile lit up my face! Out of all the good and bad things that have happened to me during my internship, this is one that I never expected and one that I will never forget.
The background behind the gift and the note goes something like this. Last week, I came back to work after my NY trip and found Dao quite perplexed. She had made some mistakes during transaction updates and that had screwed up lots of inventory records. She came to me, and I fixed it over 2 days. After that she was all praises for me and that explains the gift and note.
It feels pretty good to know that people at your workplace genuinely appreciate the work that you do. It’s actually one notch above ‘being important’ or ‘doing important stuff’ at ur internship. It gives you a nice feeling of being an integral part of the company and a part of the family of employees. It feels nice :)
And guess what this means? My mood’s great today! Which probably means that the time I spend at office today is gonna be more productive than usual!
Hmm.. this is a nice example of how a good company culture can go a long way towards increasing productivity of the company.

Biggest philanthropic act in history!

Check out this unbelievable shit! Warren Buffet pledges to donate a whopping 31 BILLION $ of his wealth (that’s 85% of his 44 billion) to the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. That’s like awesome AND freakin crazy! This is the single largest monetary donation in history!

Imagine what can be done with 31 billion dollars! I mean most countries cant afford to donate that much! This could mean some serious money going in to AIDs vaccine research among other things. Great stuff. I never expected Warren Buffet of all people to do this. To me, he always seemed to be one of those hardcore money-minded businessmen.

Hmmm.. Read on here for more details.

my home’s alive again.. finally!

well i’ve got a new roommate – Dev.. He’s the CEO of a company called Imfinity back in Singapore and he’s here to do some business development for his company.
Before this only Gaung Chen and I stayed at this house and each of us had a single room. Both of us generally stayed at work till pretty late at night everyday – not because there was lots of office work.. but more because there really wasn’t much to do at home.
Now with three people at home, it seems things are getting more lively. I kinda wanna come home and hang around there after work instead of sitting in office. cool :)
Anyways.. this again is just for a month.. after this we are going into a 3 bedroom apartment shared by 7 (!) people.. that will be even more lively i guess.. although 7 people just might be an overkill of ‘liveliness’
hmmm…

powerpoint!

Pauline (the HR manager at Excelics) came to me half an hour back looking quite anxious. She had a small IBM laptop with her (she later told me that it belonged to the CEO, Tao). She was trying to open a few powerpoint files which had words like ‘investor’ and ‘presentation’ and ‘transceiver’ in the file names. That was enough to jolt me right out of my late afternoon laziness!

Pauline wanted me to help install MS Office on her comp.. but the laptop did not have a cd drive.. so i told her that i can dload a pp viewer on my comp and copy it to her laptop using a usb drive.. and so i took the laptop, went to my cubicle and quickly installed the viewer.

Now, my brain started playing around with the idea of copying the pp files to my comp so that i can have a look at them later.. these files are from an actual presentation to a VC! that’s like kryptonite for an entrepreneurship student.. but (and obviously), these files were highly confidential.. which meant that i had no business touching them..

me seeing those files wouldn’t really harm anybody/anything.. i’m not their competitor or something.. i’m just a curious student! but could i keep my trap shut?

what du think i should’ve done?!

US hotels

well, I’m back from my east coast trip.. tired but happy..
we did quite a bit in the 5 days that we were there.. went to ny, dc, boston, niagara and phily.. saw pretty much everything tourists usually see… and took about 1.6gbs of photos (that would have made absolutely no sense some 10 years back.. gbs of photos?!)
one really good thing about the tour was that the tour company put us up at really good hotels – places like sheraton, hyatt, hilton and holiday inn! And all this for just 300 bucks! (for hotel stay + the coach ride). Anyways, as we were hopping from one good hotel to the next, there’s something peculiar that I noticed… something i think every tourist must know:

The costlier the hotel, the cheaper they get.

what do i mean by this? basically, what i saw was that as u go to a more expensive hotel, you find yourself having to pay for stuff that is generally offered for free at smaller, cheaper hotels. Things like wi-fi, coffee and even water! For eg., the smallest hotel among those we went to on the trip was Hampton Inn and they had free wi-fi, free breakfast and free freshly brewed coffee. Standard stuff actually. But then when we went to holiday inn and sheraton, we found ourselves having to pay for the wifi (10 bucks/room/day) and there was no free breakfast… and then we went to the hyatt.. and they wanted us to pay 10 bucks/person/room/day for wifi! and an outrageous 4.95 for the bottle of water in the room!! and of-course, by now, we weren’t even talking about breakfast…
its kinda ridiculous that a hotel which normally charges 150 bucks a night finds it necessary to charge for wifi when one that charges 80 a night has no qualms about giving it for free…
anyways, this is a valuable travel tip.. especially if u wanna access the net from your hotel room.
